About Us

Mariana Do Carmo

Mariana is the current President of the Yale Undergraduate Portuguese Association and a freshman interested in majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and in following the pre-med track. She was born in Sesimbra, Portugal but came to the United States when she was three months old and was also raised in a small Portuguese community found in Newark, NJ. She was a teacher’s assistant at her old Portuguese school for three years and travels to Portugal with her family every summer. She loves to visit and learn more about the country’s beautiful landscapes and rich history found in the castles and monuments such as Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a Batalha, and a Torre de Belém. She of course also loves the food, os pasteis de Belem and bacalhau a brás included amongst her favorite dishes.

Sara Torres

YUPA President 2014-2015: Sara is a Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology major, who aspires to be a pediatrician and a leader in combating national health disparities in urban cities. She was born and raised in Newark, NJ, where she taught Portuguese catechism, enjoyed watching dozens of rancho folklore dance performances, and rang in every new year with Bolo Rei (King Cake). Visiting the towns of S. Paio de Antas and Marinhas in Esposende, Portugal while learning about her family history is one of her favorite summer pastimes. She also loves tutoring and mentoring young children/adults in her spare time.  

Bryan Santos

YUPA President 2013-2014: Bryan is a Economics and Mechanical Engineering double major, focusing on financial/ developmental economics and sustainable energy. Growing up in the Portuguese community of Newark, NJ known as the Ironbound, he is passionate about promoting and maintaining Portuguese traditions, while fostering connections between Portugal and the USA. With family in Cantanhede and Oliveira das Azeméis, he loves going back to Portugal to enjoy what is, objectively, the best cuisine in the world. Other interests include traveling, playing soccer, playing the piano, and trying new wines.
